Description

In Hiraeth's central, western, and northern mountains, a phenomenon occurs where the night is alighted by cinders, and the wind carries their glow far and wide. These sparks across the wind are caused when groups of the stout Hoggo-Bees begin competing for land on the mountain side. These encounters are not violent but the show of flames can be somewhat explosive as their fires burn brighter and brighter. On windy nights, the cinders of this display are hot enough to warm the touch and light the shadows, but not strong enough to burn down trees or flora-- the true fire's strength is located with the Hoggo-Bee, who arches them across their backs and snorts them out their oversized nostrils. Their bodies are like living engines, and they need fuel to scarf down to keep their fire strong and their enemies at bay. The more minerals and metals they eat the more powerful their flame, and the larger their body grows-- most Hoggo-Bees are quite small, but with enough fuel in their belly they can go to be half the size of a common person, though with less fuel they will begin to shrink again.

After nights of territory disputes, calm settles between the Hoggo-Bee herds, and they return to their lazy demeanours. Families and their piglets stick close together, while the matriarch and her strongest stewards create miniature quarries for the rest of their herd to eat from. They sniff out minerals and ore, and use a combination of nibbling the earth, picking with their tusks, and small bursts of flame from their nose to dig into the ground to reach their favourite meals. Depending on what minerals a Hoggo-Bee most indulges in, the colour of their flame is said to change colour, ranging almost across the whole spectrum. While most known for their confrontations between each other, the Hoggo-Bees actually has a documented kindness towards travellers, and have been known to act as warming campfires for explorers who get lost in the mountains on chilly nights.
