Hiraeth Creature #449 - Chronoclam

Description

Growing from the scars of Hiraeth are the metal gardens-- sprouting up from the Undercroft, unknown artisans build forests of strange metal plants where beasts live with steam coursing through their veins. These places almost feel like worlds unto themselves, and many of the monsters who live are feared, though a few of them are benevolent. Clustered together in patches are Chronoclams, who hide in their metal shells, unsnapping them to unfold their legs and skitter around. Every metal garden has a huge clock tower, and as they chime, the Chronoclams respond to a very regimented cycle, always taking the same hours to rest, get up and toil. They are said to climb up abstract structures to help clean pipes and wells, eating the strange grit they find. Chronoclams act a bit more naturally when taken out of their homes, and are usually taken by mages who venture into these foreboding places. Mechanical creatures, like weapons, garbs, and jewelry, can be enchanted to hold magical properties. Mages sometime use these creatures as powerful scrying tools, granting powerful premonitions and visions. A renowned battle-mage was said to have used a Chronoclam as a shield, and could use its unlocked magical potential to see every attack right before it happened.

I love the Orablis. I would risk going to the Metal Gardens just so I could bring one home with me. They are so stinking adorable. If I were to have an Orablis, I think I would enchant it to function as a compass, since they kind of look like them. But mostly I'd just let him trundle around my room and enjoy himself.
